Starting your own business is like getting married.
You are excited about the new adventure. You’re nervous. Yet you know it’s going to be a lot of work.
And then there’s starting your own business from home. That presents unique challenges all on its own. And if you find yourself a little overwhelmed, it’s time to find that balance between selling Young Living Oils and living your life.
So, we have come up with a quick guide to how you can find that balance between your business and the rest of your life. And before you know it, you’ll be selling product and living the dream.
1. Establish Your Three Spaces
When you work in a traditional 9-5 outside your home, you automatically have two spaces. Your work. Your home.
Most people spend most of their lives in either place.
But when you work from home, you don’t automatically have two spaces. A lot of families have only one computer. And often the computer is right in the center of all the activity.
But that is not where you should conduct your work. Even if you have to cordon off a space that’s yours and only yours, do it.
And if you can afford to spare a whole room devoted to selling Young Living Oils, do that too. Because when you are self-employed, you can deduct your office space, a portion of your utilities, and other things from your taxes.
Once you’ve established two spaces: your home and your workspaces, you need a third place.
Sociologist Ray Oldenburg hit upon the concept of a “third place” back in 1989. It’s this idea that in order to be whole, people need a place outside their home and work. And that place needs to be a place where people of like mind commune.
This could be a cafe, a bar, a church, a dance hall. It can be anywhere people whom you enjoy gather and talk.
It’s a space of connection. Because we need to connect with people beyond the basic needs of life. That’s why the third space is important.
It’s a place where social change happens.
It’s a place where you rub elbows with both the rich and the poor. And it’s a place where you gain perspective outside your own bubble.
2. Take A Day Of Rest From Selling Young Living Oils
While making money is good, and it’s what you will do when you sell Young Living oils, it’s not the end all be all of life.
And Robert Dabney once said, “As a moral and social institution, a weekly rest is invaluable. … It ensures the necessary vacation in those earthly and turbulent anxieties and affections, which would otherwise become inordinate and morbid.”
This is why you need a day off once a week. To recharge. If you don’t you will burn out.
The point of the day of rest is to do something different with your day. Get out into nature. Take a walk in a park. Turn off the TV, the cell phone, the computer. These are all distractions from your surroundings. And rest.
If it means sleeping in, sleep in. If it means going for a jog, go for a jog. If it means crawling on the floor with your children, crawl like a child. These are good things.
And once you rest for those 24 hours, you will be rested and motivated to make money. And you will indeed make more than you thought possible this way.
3. Separate Work And Family Time
Jonathan Lockwood Huie once said, “A time for everything: A time to relax and a time to be busy, a time to frolic and a time to labor, a time to receive and a time to give, a time to begin and a time to finish.”
You may not be able to fully divorce work and family time from each other. If you’re working at home because you have an infant, your infant will require your attention.
The brain cannot do task simultaneously. Instead, it switches from one task to another and back again. This, of course, has to do with cognitive function.
You cannot focus your mental attention on two things at once. You can run and listen to music. But you cannot text and listen to music.
The difference is that running doesn’t take cognitive power, only physical and autonomic brain power.
Texting, on the other hand, requires your brain to think. And while you are texting, you are not focusing on the music. You are in essence blocking it out of your mind.
When our brains switch back and forth between something like texting and listening to either music or a conversation, this is taxing. And it’s less efficient.
If you could instead do one thing at a time, you would then have more energy for each task. And you will have more energy for tasks later on in the day.
You need to have devoted time for work. You need to have devoted time for family and the rest of your life. If you have to take 10-20 minutes for baby or to pick up a kid from school or to get that package delivered. Do it.
Don’t try to think about selling Young Living Oils while you’re trying to focus on your children or your partner. You will exhaust yourself.
4. Take A Break To Excercise Every Day
Some office workers take walking breaks.
You can probably guess which one we’re all about.
If you walk two minutes out of every hour of the day, you will increase your lifespan by 33%.
Get up. Move. Working from home does demand long hours in a chair. But this doesn’t mean you can’t take a quick break, throw on the walking shoes, and go for a walk around the block.
